I have one cheap pipe that I bought - can't remember if it was Roma or not but the price range was similar.
The thing smokes alright now but breaking it in almost killed me - SUCH a foul taste from whatever they coated the inside of the bowl with, I could barely bring myself to smoke the thing and the stuff just wouldn't go away. Driving home, I would load the bowl with some cheap blend I didn't care for, light it, then roll the truck window down a crack and stick the stem out occasionally so the draft out the window smoked the pipe and I didn't have to.
Never had that problem with a Savinelli...

Thanks for the info/advice. I'm all for saving and getting a bargain, but not at any cost and your experience sounds awful!

I think what they did is slop the finish down into the bowl of the pipe, then cover it up with that black, 'instant cake' gunk. It tasted like some kind of burning solvent. I prefer pipe bowls that are just natural wood - without that black stuff. That way you can see if they did that.
