Admirable restraint and you chose wisely (the Old Knight from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). The 20% off made the McClelland and Rattray tins a very palatable price. I ordered a few of them myself and was going to load up on Stokkebye but I already have a lot so I trimmed to 12 oz. I didn't have as much restraint so I ordered several F&T tins that have been out of stock everywhere and were, with this sale, ~$8.20.

Does P&C have a Bum discount?

Others may have a better handle on whether this is a good deal or not but if you're starting all you need is a pipe (cobs are fine), a tobacco (5 is lot to start with as in this deal), pipe cleaners and an inexpensive pipe tool, that you can get for $25. Depends how deep in the pool you want to start.

Definitely not bad (and definitely not "one of *those* guys" who's gonna holler about it all the time), maybe would partake if it weren't impossible to find, but honestly the $50+ per pound price tag availability aside is a bit steep for me.

The stokkebye flakes are quite good, though they've gone up in price recently. Used to be able to get them for $42.50 from CI, and use a 20% coupon. That was a pretty darn good deal.

I've accumulated about 30 pounds of pipe tobacco since 2013 when I started, on a very tight budget. I estimate I've spent no more than 600 dollars on it, probably less. I never buy tins, unless the cost per ounce was somehow cheaper than bulk (which is never). I have probably two tins cellared, which were both gifts. Of course mason jars are a cost, but between thrift shops, and putting notice out to friends to save their mason/ball jars for me, I haven't spent much. Plus dear old parents give a gift card to a tourist gimmick chain up here every Christmas, so usually end up with a flat or two of jars, rather than buy an old stale can of peanuts, or some clothesline, or a garden gnome! :P

Daughters & Ryan and Cornell & Diehl make up the bulk of my cellar, mainly because I like them a lot and they are very inexpensive. The fact that they use little to no humectant adds to the value. I don't particularly care for most of the McClelland stuff i've tried, at least not enough to offset the fact that it costs nearly twice as much as D&R or C&D (during sales is when I buy those) and you get less. I haven't smoked any Samuel Gawith (although I like their nasal snuffs a lot), but do love G&H and when I have some more income will probably splurge on a bit. Jiminks turned me on to that Smoker's Pride Rich Taste a while ago, it's sort of like prince albert minus the PG-- I ended up getting almost 2 pounds of it for free, when CI/P&C/cigar.com were sending out free gift cards last holiday season.

I am definitely against smoking tobacco you don't like just because it's cheap. I just consider myself fortunate that I've found a bunch of tobaccos that happen to be cheap, that I quite like. I have some GLP blends that I like quite a bit, for example, but I don't consider them better enough to warrant the extra cost over C&D. of course a lot of people hate C&D/GLP and say it's harsh and green tasting; D&R would probably be even worse for those people (a lot of people won't even try D&R because they think it's RYO) etc. So for those people 90% of what I smoke is off the table, just different smokes for different folks.

I know what I like as far as pipe tools / accessories and have all the ones I want already; don't want or need any more. I know what I like as far as lighters and guess what? I have the ones I want already. Let someone else have the grab-bags full of junk - someone who will appreciate it because I won't.

I think I got one last year and most of the stuff that came is still stuffed in some random box in the basement and I couldn't begin to guess where so I guess I see your point.

As for tobacco, about the only thing I've been wanting to pick up is some tins of FVF to cellar and they always seem to be out so guess I'll pass on the deals this year.

I think the giveaways are great for new people just starting out and people like me who are always interested in trying something new but I can see what you mean. I think I got one last year and most of the stuff that came is still stuffed in some random box in the basement and I couldn't begin to guess where so I guess I see your point.

Hahaha! Yep, that's exactly where the stuff would end up if they gave it to me; something to trip over and clean around that would never get used and should just get thrown away... but wouldn't because hey it's brand new! Better to give it away to some n00b or somebody who will smoke just about anything and like it. I gotta go look at those pipes again and see how much 15% knocks off. Can't remember what they cost even. I think both together would be around 200 so that's 30 bucks... not sure I care tho, I have enough pipes too.

I looked at pipes and cigars I remember hearing about good deals and specials for pipe day in the past. I have 1 real pipe and a couple cobs (I have not smoked in yet) I have some pouches of pipe tobacco not opened yet and a can of a freebie tobacco but I like it. Not sure 15% does anything for me as I have the basics and more cigars than I can count so the pipe doesn't get used much.

Decided to pick up this Ser Jacopo that I've been eying off and on for a couple months.
It's a sitter - kind of a cherrywood shape. I like sitters. Plus it has a relatively long shank. I like that too. I'm a big fan of canadian and lumberman pipes. In fact the other pipe I was eyeing was a canadian.
